 Typhoon Goalie Naomi Katsumi
If there’s one team looking to bounce back during the 2009 Canadian Multicultural Hockey Championships, it’ll be the Japanese Typhoon.
With a bronze in 2006 and a silver in 2007, the team was poised to claim their missing gold medal in 2008. When it was announced that the two-time gold medal winners, the Ojibwe Northern Storm, would not be making the trip south for the tournament, it almost seemed like the Typhoon had the gold in their hands.
However, it was not to be. The team opened the tournament with a 2-2 tie against the Chinese Mayhem Dragons and later that day, faced a strong Irish Raiders team that handed the Typhoon a 6-0 loss. #33 Suzie Fujiki
With a playoff berth on the line, the Typhoon faced the European Sirens in their final round-robin match-up. The Typhoon held on to a 2-0 lead going into the third period but the Sirens came from behind and won the game, 3-2, scoring the go-ahead goal with less than five minutes remaining in the game.
In order to return to the playoffs, the team needs a big tournament from goaltenders Naomi Katsumi and Megan Marubashi, who were both key to the team’s silver medal run in 2007. Both goalies are capable of shutting the door and picking up shutouts. But the team also needs strength upfront and veteran forward Suzie Fujiki will be looked upon to provide some offensive firepower.
If the Typhoon can bounce back, they’ll surely be in the hunt for that elusive gold medal.
